What does your organisation do?
We manufacture and distribute a range of building products and materials for the building and construction industry. Our brands include Laminex AU, Iplex Pipelines, Rocla, Fletcher Insulation, Tradelink, Oliveri and Stramit.
We make up 4000 employees of the broader 15,000 strong Fletcher Group.
How did you find out about the Mentemia app?
Sir John Kirwan (also known as JK) and Mentemia did some promotional work in Fletcher Building NZ and our Chief Executive, Dean Fradgley, wanted to create a strong focus on mental health in Australia so we partnered with Mentemia in our division
What drove the business to seek additional support and resources to assist employee mental wellbeing?
While resilience and wellbeing has always been something we have kept front of mind, this year in particular has been extremely tough and we wanted to be able to provide some additional support to our employees and really assure them that its ok not to be ok. We were hearing that a significant number of our employees and their families were struggling with resilience and wellbeing and our leaders were reaching out to ask for advice on how to better support their people.
We are currently rolling out a Safety Culture program and we’d identified mental health and wellbeing as our first key initiative in this program. We felt strongly that wellbeing, focus and mental health played a huge part in safety so we introduced it as our first initiative. We called it “Protect our mental health” which is a nod to our Safety brand of “Protect” and also one of our Fletcher Building values.
From a business perspective, what is the general consensus regarding the effectiveness of the Mentemia app?
We’ve had great feedback. Many of our senior leaders have commented on the breathing part of the APP. Most people love the daily wellbeing reminders and we’ve also heard great things about the worry map. It’s a favourite of mine.
We went a step (or a few steps further) with Mentemia and we utilised the strength in their speakers JK and Fiona.
“We created the most powerful launch session virtually with 220 senior leaders where our CE and GMs spoke candidly and honestly about their own wellbeing, supported by Fiona and JK with their stories. It’s probably the proudest moment I have ever had in my career, listening to these leaders step up and speak with vulnerability, encouraging the rest of the business to do the same.”
We then ran several other sessions, drawing on the knowledge of JK and Fiona. One for leaders on how to support their teams in these times, one for our crew of 250 Protect Ambassadors (our self nominated champions of wellbeing and safety) and a special one for the 1400 team members in VIC, who are really battling at the moment.
The feedback is overwhelming to be honest, more so than I had thought. JK is hilarious, honest and frames it in such a way that many of our employees love. Fiona balances him beautifully the way she gives context and frames up concepts using Psychological principles.
